The Team

Dr. John L. Barnes, DC

Dr. Barnes received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology/Exercise from the College of William & Mary in 1989. He later attended New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1994. Upon graduation, Dr. Barnes served as adjunct faculty of NYCC in addition to treating patients in the Seneca Falls campus clinic.

In 1997, he opened his solo practice, Barnes Chiropractic in Centreville, which has grown into a successful multidisciplinary wellness center. During this time, Dr. Barnes has continued his postgraduate training in fitness and chiropractic. In addition to continuing education in Chiropractic technique and practice, he has completed two certifications in personal fitness training. His first certification was under the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and the second from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

Over his over 18 years in practice in Centreville, Dr. Barnes has had the opportunity to work with athletes of all ages and levels from youth, high school, college, semi-professional and professional. He is currently the “Official Chiropractor for Centreville High School Sports.” He has also built strong inter-professional relationships with other physicians in many specialties that he enjoys co-managing cases with when necessary. In addition to helping relieve pain and treat injuries, Dr. Barnes enjoys blending his background in fitness and human performance with chiropractic care to give each patient the ability to achieve higher levels of health and fitness than they thought possible.

Having lost 40 lbs himself using the Ideal Protein protocol, he is very excited to be able to offer this program in his practice! He has always wanted to offer a safe, reliable, and repeatable weight loss plan for the population he serves and he believes the Ideal Protein Diet “just makes sense!”*

Layla Rush

My name is Layla Rush and I have the privilege of coaching Ideal Protein dieters at Barnes Chiropractic Health & Fitness.

I grew up and lived in South Texas until 2004, when my husband I and moved to Northern Virginia. In 2009, I was hired as a receptionist at Dr. Barnes’ office. In the years that followed I found, as many happily married persons with desk jobs do, that my waistline was expanding. For reasons unknown to me then, I could not beat back the bulge as effectively as I could a few years before. So, in 2015, I became an Ideal Protein beta test dieter for Dr. Barnes.

I was nervous about doing the Ideal Protein Protocol because I loved food, baking, and making sweets, but I knew I needed to do something. Thankfully, I was still able to do each of those things while on the protocol, just in a new way. By the end of my time on the Ideal Protein Protocol, I was down to a loose Size 8 from a snug Size 14 and I’d lost over 40 lbs. All of this during four very eventful months spent renovating and selling our home for the past decade and then buying and moving into our new home. Furthermore, this was in the middle of summer, which meant cookouts, pot lucks, and baby showers. I was able to handle all of this while on (and, in some cases, because of) the Ideal Protein Protocol.

My health came a long way as well following the successful weight loss on the Ideal Protein Protocol. My blood pressure came down from what my GP had called “Stroke Levels” to normal, so I no longer require hypertension medication. Due to reduced inflammation in my stomach following the weight loss, I’m able to enjoy acidic foods, like tomatoes and coffee, again. Also, much of my joint aches and pains have decreased or, in the case of my knuckles, vanished completely.

After the amazing results I personally experienced and have seen with each of Dr. Barnes’ dieters, I was inspired to become an Ideal Protein coach myself in January, 2016.*

Lori Palau

Lori grew up in Darien, Connecticut and attended Quinnipiac University.  She graduated cum laude in 1987 with a B.A. in Psychology/Human Services.  Lori moved to Northern Virginia in 1988 and began a career with Fairfax County Government’s Community Services Board, Intellectual Disability Services.  She spent more than 27 years serving Fairfax County citizens with intellectual disabilities and their families.  In 2017, Lori retired as a Support Coordinator Supervisor.

Her Ideal Protein Journey began in January 2016, when at age 50, she was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. After having tried all other commercial weight loss programs, it was her experience that losing weight and maintaining a weight loss was impossible.  At more than 50 lbs. overweight, Lori came to Barnes Chiropractic Health & Fitness and began Ideal Protein.  In 5 short months, she lost 52 lbs.  Her next physical exam showed that all 3 serious health issues (pre-diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol) were resolved.  For the first time, she has been able to lose weight and keep it off.

Lori became an Ideal Protein Coach in the Fall of 2017.  It is her genuine belief that Ideal Protein saved her life.  As a two-time breast cancer survivor, she is committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through Ideal Protein.  Statistics show that obesity and an elevated BMI are distinct risk factors for breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence.  As a wife and parent, she feels compelled to remain healthy and active.

Lori believes that anyone can be successful with Ideal Protein.  She advocates a coaching style that provides knowledgeable and non-judgmental support.  Lori has personal and professional experience with Ideal Protein, and understands well the power of this protocol, and the impact it can have—and will have—on anyone’s life who chooses to pursue it.
